Alternative Provisions Centre based in the heart of the South Downs

Below are some photos of the animals at Animal School during animal handling sessions and rest at the centre.

Most of the 120 animals Lindsay cares for at Animal School have been rescued or donated over the last 17 years. From gentle sheep and a curious llama to playful guinea pigs, cheeky rabbits, and tiny harvest mice.

Here every animal has their own story. Visitors can meet a colourful parrot, friendly snakes and lizards. and even our more unusual residents like Blossom the wallaby, clever ravens and crows, tortoises, tarantulas, and giant frogs and toads. Each creature, big or small, helps to create a truly unique place where humans of all ages can learn, explore, and discover the magic of the animal world!

History of Lindsay and her Animal School (40 years in the making)

Follow the Blog
Lindsay is creator of Animal School.

She has been providing animal experiences to the public for the last 17 years. She has always been passionate about animals and hopes to pass this on to anyone she meets!

She grew up on a farm in the countryside and always wanted to show people animals. According to her Mum she used to catch bumblebees at the age of one and present them to her alarmed parents (surely she was just trying to share her love of animals even then) Because she can speak fluent bee they never stung her.

She even tried to start her animal club at the age of five, sadly back then nobody wanted to join. Luckily she was surrounded by animals which she could talk to and would performed animal shows to anyone who would watch, albeit with plush toys . She drew elaborate programs and images for those too which is where she gained a love of art.

Lindsay wanted to study Biology at college but she struggled with maths and couldn't get high enough grades. Instead she went down a creative route and studied Art at Central St Martins College of Art, gaining a BA in illustration.

After university she worked for ten years as a manager in a pet shop. Among other work it was during her time at the pet shop she ran "Rodent Repair"- a workshop to fix biting hamsters. It was there at the pet shop that she started working with Smokey the African Grey Parrot, hand reared a chipmunk "Twif" a tame jackdaw "Jack" and numerous other pets and wild animals that were dropped off at the door.

She also. set up an animal handling club.  These "Pet Clubs" formed the foundations of the business today. Some of the little children who used to frequent this "Pet Club" now work for Lindsay today. They are not so little anymore. Look out for their stories in "Our Staff" section.

Over the years Lindsay has rescued and rehabilitated many wild species of animals: rabbits, squirrels, mice, swallows, woodpeckers, blackbirds, robins, crows and ducks to name a few.

In 2014 she set up "Lindsay's Animal School" and has provided over a thousand birthday parties, visits to care homes, hospitals, scouts, brownies, events and oh you name it she probably took animals to it and provided a talk.

Over the last ten years she has also specialised in offering animal therapy work with the NHS, working with people with anxiety and depression.

In 2021 Lindsay set up "Animal School" an animal therapy centre in Sussex. It's still Lindsay's however, she has trained an incredible team of staff and volunteers who now help to provide animal lessons to people of all ages. She is happy to share it and hopes you might visit.

Her Saturday and holiday event classes are so popular they often sell out and it is here at Animal School that she works with organisations such as SENse learning to provide animal therapy to young people who are out of school.

She has just created an Animal School Alternative Provisions Program and is delighted to be able to now offer this directly to children and young people in Brighton and Hove, hopefully with more councils to come.

Lindsay has a creative holistic approach, delivering engaging talks to  about the natural world using her rescued live animals, puppets and worksheets. She creates illustrated lesson worksheets that the children work from, she has written a novel and is currently writing a range of care guides on pets and their use in therapy. A couple of times a year she runs "Creative Creatures" which is a drawing and storytelling workshops using live animals with her own illustrations and photographs of her animals from her shows.

Lindsay is also a trained animal healer and communicator and a member of the Healing Animals Organisation. She tries to bring this healing into her work, using mindfulness, meditation and chi gong exercises to help people connect with animals and control their energies.

She spends her time between classes caring for the 100 or so mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, fish, molluscs, arachnids and insects, she likes climbing trees, performing in her band as a singer/songwriter and practising Kung fu!
